Zakat on Gold: Nisab in Grams and How to Calculate It (With Examples)
By Editorial team ·

This guide explains the nisab for gold, when zakat becomes due and how to calculate it for any karat, with links to our live calculator.
What is the nisab for gold?
The nisab is 20 mithqal = 85 grams of pure (24K) gold. At today's price that is about 42,263 SAR.

Nisab by karat
| Karat | Purity | Nisab |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 85 g |
| 22K | 91.6% | 92.7 g |
| 21K | 87.5% | 97.1 g |
| 18K | 75% | 113.3 g |
Conditions
- You own at least the nisab in pure gold.
- A full lunar year (hawl) has passed.
- Full ownership of the gold.
The rate
Zakat is 2.5% (one fortieth) of the gold's value or weight, at the price on the day you pay.
Step-by-step calculation
- Add up the weight of pieces of the same karat.
- Convert to pure gold: weight × (karat ÷ 24).
- Check it reaches 85 g.
- Multiply pure grams by the 24K gram price (497.21 SAR now).
- Multiply by 2.5%.
Example: 120 g of 22K
Pure gold = 120 × 0.9167 = 110 g (above nisab). Zakat = 120 × 455.78 × 0.025 SAR.
Example: 90 g of 21K
Pure gold = 90 × 0.875 = 78.75 g, below 85 g, so no zakat unless other gold completes the nisab.

Zakat on jewellery that is worn
Scholars differ. The majority of the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold there is no zakat on jewellery worn normally. The Hanafi school, and Saudi scholars such as Shaykh Ibn Baz and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, hold that zakat is due once the nisab is reached. Gold held for saving, such as bars and coins, is zakatable by consensus. Ask a scholar about your situation.
