Platinum and palladium
Platinum (1,658.00 $/oz) and palladium (1,128.00 $/oz) are rarer than gold and are used mainly in car catalytic converters, electronics and fine jewellery. In Saudi Arabia platinum is mostly seen in wedding rings and men's jewellery.
One gram of platinum costs about 199.90 SAR today – compare with 497.37 SAR for 24K gold and 6.99 SAR for silver.
Why do industrial metals move differently?
Gold is driven mainly by investment and central banks, while platinum and palladium depend on car production and industrial demand, so they can rise when gold falls and vice versa.
Platinum vs. white gold
White gold is regular gold (usually 18K) mixed with white metals and plated with rhodium, while platinum is a naturally white, denser metal. Platinum jewellery is heavier and does not need re-plating, but it costs more to craft. Compare with 18K gold prices.
Are platinum and palladium good investments?
They are more volatile than gold and depend heavily on industrial demand, so most savers in Saudi Arabia prefer gold bars. If you do invest, buy from licensed dealers and remember that resale spreads can be wide.
