Where does the global gold price come from?
The international (spot) gold price is formed by trading in London, New York (COMEX) and Asian markets, almost 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening. It is quoted as XAU/USD – US dollars per troy ounce. Right now it stands at 4,122.70 $.
What moves the spot price?
- US interest rates and Federal Reserve decisions – higher rates usually pressure gold.
- The US dollar – a weaker dollar tends to lift gold.
- Inflation data (CPI) and jobs reports.
- Geopolitical tension and central-bank buying, which raise safe-haven demand.
From global price to Saudi price
Because the riyal is pegged at 3.75 per dollar, a 1% move in XAU/USD moves the 21K, 22K and 24K gram prices in Saudi Arabia by the same 1%. Silver follows its own market – see the silver price.
