How Gold Prices Are Calculated in Saudi Arabia (Per Gram, Tola and Ounce)
By Editorial team ·

Every gold price in the Kingdom starts from one number: the international spot price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Here is how that becomes the gold rate per gram in SAR.

The formula
24K gram price (SAR) = (spot ounce in USD ÷ 31.1035) × 3.75
- 31.1035 = grams in one troy ounce.
- 3.75 = the fixed SAR/USD exchange rate, pegged since 1986.
With the ounce at 4,124.00 USD, 24K gold is about 497.21 SAR per gram.
Other karats
| Karat | Multiply by | Price now |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 1 | 497.21 SAR |
| 22K | 0.9167 | 455.78 SAR |
| 21K | 0.875 | 435.06 SAR |
| 18K | 0.75 | 372.91 SAR |
Tola and ounce
- 1 tola = 11.6638 g, so 22K tola = 11.6638 × 22K gram price (5,316.09 SAR now).
- 1 ounce in SAR = spot USD × 3.75 (15,465.00 SAR now).
Why the shop price is higher
Shop price = weight × gram rate + making charge, plus 15% VAT on both. Read VAT and making charges explained.

Is the gold price the same across Saudi cities?
Yes. The raw gram rate is identical in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and everywhere else; only making charges and shop margins vary. See gold rate in Riyadh and Jeddah.
